John Marshall, a long standing friend of the Riordan family, was born in London in 1922. He studied engineering at Cambridge University, and joined Vauxhall Motors in Luton (part of General Motors) in 1942. John spent the rest of his working life with General Motors. He married Helen Hunter in 1948, and they moved to Melbourne in 1953 to work with General Motors Holden at Fisherman's Bend.
John and Helen have three children, eight grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
John developed multiple myeloma late in 2004, and died in 2005, after a courageous battle. Although he suffered considerable pain, he remained cheerful and optimistic until the end. He was inspired by the positive attitudes of his fellow patients, and of the staff, and was in turn an inspiration to those around him.
John was treated at the Cabrini Hospital during his illness, and his family felt that it would be appropriate to honour his memory with a scholarship at the Cabrini Institute. Accordingly the Foundation set up The John Marshall Memorial Scholarship at the Institute in November 2005.
